Don Crowder’s Career & Case of Candy Montgomery

Don’s career as an attorney began when he joined an established firm soon after completing his college studies, but two years later, he resigned and decided to begin his own practice, eventually forming a partnership with his ex-classmates John Allen Curtis and Jim Mattox.

Crowder was a passionate lawyer, and it was hard for him to accept defeat, which is why he was even charged with contempt of court once. He was also a very religious guy and regularly visited the United Methodist Church of Lucas: this was where he met Candy, and when nobody was ready to represent Montgomery, he decided to represent her. On October 30, 1980, the jury gave its decision and found Candy not guilty.

People in Collin County did not like the result and got angry at Don. He even received death threats from many people; his friends started avoiding him at every chance. In 1986 he ran for elections of Governor of Texas and received 118,530 votes, which was insufficient for his victory. Five years later, he opened “Gameday Sports Cafe,” a sports bar that he had to close down due to a financial crisis.
